Summary

Malibu: August 1983。 It's the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch。 Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit。 Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over--especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva。

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband。 Oh, and maybe Hud--because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he's been inseparable since birth。

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can't stop thinking about promised she'll be there。

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own--including a guest she invited without consulting anyone。

By midnight the party will be completely out of control。 By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames。 But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations will all come bubbling to the surface。

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them 。 。 。 and what they will leave behind。

Loved! My only "complaint" is I felt some of the ending felt rushed。。。although complete, it felt rushed。。。but maybe that means there's opening for a "spinoff"The character development was amazing。 I truly felt like I was there with the Rivas。 Loved! So, let me tell you about my love/hate relationship with Taylor Jenkins Reid。 She seems to be a BOTM Goddess。 Daisy Jones and the Six and the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo were both HUGE hits within in the club, and people to this day still talk about what life changing books they were for them。I, however, hated both of them。 With Daisy Jones it was the repetitiveness of the story; spoiled, beautiful, talented adults struggling。 Yawn。 With the Seven Husbands, it was the repetitiveness of getting So, let me tell you about my love/hate relationship with Taylor Jenkins Reid。 She seems to be a BOTM Goddess。 Daisy Jones and the Six and the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo were both HUGE hits within in the club, and people to this day still talk about what life changing books they were for them。I, however, hated both of them。 With Daisy Jones it was the repetitiveness of the story; spoiled, beautiful, talented adults struggling。 Yawn。 With the Seven Husbands, it was the repetitiveness of getting to the point。 Yet these books I struggled through seemed to just blow people away, and I always struggled with it。 Am I missing something? Should I read them again? But, I am a firm believer that life is much too short to read a bad book twice so I moved on with my life and accepted that I am an anomaly when it comes to the golden author that is TJR。Then, I read Malibu Rising。 If 2020 threw my social life for a loop, then 2021 is throwing my reading habits for a loop。 To sit here and admit that The Maidens, a book that I seriously drove all over Lilith’s Green Earth for was a total disappointment, but Malibu Rising, a book I was peer pressured into reading was phenomenal, well I am at a loss。With Malibu Rising we are introduced to the Riva kids。 All four of them share a father, some loser named Mick who actually has the celebrity of Frank Sinatra, but that’s where the similarities end。 You see Mick made it big and became a pig。 Or perhaps he was always a pig and just had more of a chance to showcase it when he was famous, either way he pretty much ditched the kids for a life of fame。As they grow into adulthood they are closer than most siblings, but slowly learning that the differences in their dreams may mean that they have to take different roads at some point in life。 Nina, the oldest, is a recently married model who is dealing with her husband leaving her for another woman。 History repeats itself。Jay, the famous surfer brother is dealing with his own mortality as he learns that his surfing career may have to end sooner rather than later。Hudson, Jay’s “twin”, is in love with the ex-girlfriend of Jay。 Kit, the youngest (sorry to detour here but I have to throw this out “This is my lovely daughter Dottie。 And this is my other daughter, Kit”, ok continue) is trying to break out of her sibling’s shadow and find out who she really is。The Riva children are not just famous because of their dad and semi-decent seafood restaurant, but also for their end of the year party that is thrown every year。 Everyone, from the waitress who works at the family restaurant to the biggest movie stars are invited as long as they know the address。 That is pretty much the only rule。What I loved about the party, and part two of this book was that you are introduced to so many characters, none of them are really major players in the story, but it’s such a neat twist to see how many people are at the same party are looking for the same thing。 Also, I had a good time trying to figure out whom the fictional characters were supposed to be modeled after in real Hollywood life。The party brings out some new family members, and some older ones that are better off forgotten, but most of all it brings something out of each sibling that they desperately need。For me, this book was such a good read because it just reminded me of my youth。 Those days that turned into nights with friends。 The parties that seemed to be the most important thing in your life at that moment, the problems that seemed to the biggest issues you would ever have in life, just those carefree moments in the life that you didn’t know were carefree until years later。To read the rest of my review please visit https://nightmareonbookstreet13。wordp。。。 。。。more

Fast paced fun story- Malibu, rich people, and surfing!

Once again Taylor Jenkins Reid has crafted fabulous, deeply thought out characters and interweaving storylines that made me love this book! Can’t say it compared to Daisy Jones or Evelyn Hugo but I still really enjoyed it。

This book has been hyped as the book of the summer, and as a fan of Reid's previous book, "Daisy Jones & The Six," I was hoping it wouldn't disappoint。 It did not。 This is exactly what I want my summer read to be: breezy, fun, set in gorgeous Malibu with surfboards, seafood and bikinis。 Oh, and celebrity sightings and a wild, famous party。 The book is set in one day in 1983, leading up to the annual famous "everyone who's everyone in Hollywood will be there" party thrown by the Riva children。 Th This book has been hyped as the book of the summer, and as a fan of Reid's previous book, "Daisy Jones & The Six," I was hoping it wouldn't disappoint。 It did not。 This is exactly what I want my summer read to be: breezy, fun, set in gorgeous Malibu with surfboards, seafood and bikinis。 Oh, and celebrity sightings and a wild, famous party。 The book is set in one day in 1983, leading up to the annual famous "everyone who's everyone in Hollywood will be there" party thrown by the Riva children。 They're the adult kids of their deadbeat dad, the famous rock start Mick Riva。 We know from the very beginning of the book that by the end of the party there will be a giant fire in Malibu started at the party。 But that doesn't lend a sense of foreboding as much as "what in the world happened?" fun drama。 The book goes back in time to the 1950s and tells us how musician Mick, destined to be famous, meets naive 17-year-old June working at her parents' seafood restaurant。 We learn about their rocky romance over the period of the book, while back in 1983, we learn about the drama and struggles of the now rich and famous Riva children。 And, mind you, they're not rich and famous because of their dad, but because the oldest, Nina, was discovered as a model, who really wants to be known as a surfer。 Then, her brother, Jay, becomes a famous surfer。 Hud becomes a photographer who sells surfing photos of Jay, and Kit, the youngest at 20, is still trying to figure out who she is but may just be the best surfer in the family。 You may be surprised in a book about rich and famous children that these kids turned out well and you will like them。 They're incredibly close and care about each other and are trying to figure out what's right for them and their siblings。 I loved this book mostly because I loved the sibling bond they had。 But there are some super fun parts of the book, as the party gets out of hand and celebrity guests start doing wilder and wilder things。 Enjoy this fun book of the summer。 。。。more

I know this book has its faults with the plot but I still really loved it, specifically it’s characters, and I think it is impossible for TJR to write a bad book。Nina is best girl。 Cannot wait for the next instalment of this world TJR has created4。75 stars

I am somewhere between 2 and 3 stars。 Taylor Jenkins Reid did what she does best, she created believable characters and put them in a gorgeous setting。 But this time story was, to tell you the truth, boring。 I LOVED Evelyn and Daisy so I had high hopes for a perfect summer read。 I struggled to finish it, and I am so sorry that I did not like this one 😔

Mick and June Riva seem to have the ultimate love story when they meet, fall quickly in love and then Mick becomes a star。 Unfortunately Mick is a bit of a jerk who thinks it’s more than fine to have the wife at home running the family restaurant whilst he seems to have fun with every female that comes his way。 Leaving June devastated and taking care of four of his children, Mick becomes a memory to his children and June finds solace in alcohol which leads to her premature demise。 The story is b Mick and June Riva seem to have the ultimate love story when they meet, fall quickly in love and then Mick becomes a star。 Unfortunately Mick is a bit of a jerk who thinks it’s more than fine to have the wife at home running the family restaurant whilst he seems to have fun with every female that comes his way。 Leaving June devastated and taking care of four of his children, Mick becomes a memory to his children and June finds solace in alcohol which leads to her premature demise。 The story is based purely around one night for the Riva children, their annual party with flashbacks to the events that brought them to that point。 Each of them are flawed and struggling against their upbringing。 I despised Mick, pitied June and really had great admiration for the character of Nina who rises from the ashes to start a new life for herself。 For me, this was a great read and a beautiful cover that symbolises (in my opinion) the sea and fire。 。。。more

three things: 1。 there’s just something about the way Taylor Jenkins Reid writes female characters that takes my breath away。 they’re always so complex and layered and real。 i’m absolutely in love with the way she writes。 2。 i love the Riva siblings so much。 their bond is so special and heartwarming 🥺 and, while they’re all flawed and imperfect (as all humans are), they’re all positively wonderful。 3。 FUCK Mick Riva!!! all my homies hate Mick Riva 😠

I absolutely adored the first half of this book and literally devoured it。 Although when it came to part 2 (where the structure changed), I just found it all over the place。 I am unsure what I am meant to be feeling coming away from this book, as the ending also just felt unsatisfying and a bit boring (sorry!)Nevertheless, I love TJRs writing which was the best part of this book。 She's so easy and accessible to read, but also just really good? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 this book is seriously amazing! i have been wanting to get myself into reading and im glad i chose this as the first book to read! it was very engaging and couldn’t put the book down at all! i enjoyed the set up of the book — how it refers to the current plot and then a rewind to their parents time! once again, i can’t say this enough but this book is incredible。 i definitely recommend :)

this was one of my most anticipated books this year because i've loved taylor jenkins reid's two previous books so much。 but somehow, at the same time, i wasn't expecting it to be as good。 maybe because such similar concepts just won't work three times in a row? because it already sounded a little like lots of books i've read before?the premise sounded cool and it's exactly what you get: four siblings of a super-famous singer throw a party in malibu every year, and this year it gets out of contr this was one of my most anticipated books this year because i've loved taylor jenkins reid's two previous books so much。 but somehow, at the same time, i wasn't expecting it to be as good。 maybe because such similar concepts just won't work three times in a row? because it already sounded a little like lots of books i've read before?the premise sounded cool and it's exactly what you get: four siblings of a super-famous singer throw a party in malibu every year, and this year it gets out of control。 you get nothing more, nothing less。 which is to say, this book did not surprise, shock, or move me in any particular way。 while i liked the characters, i didn't really feel close to most of them in the way i would have liked。 we get so many stories in only a bit over 300 pages, which made for a cool and unique narrative style, but also felt very cliché to me。 most of those people we read about are white, straight, rich and famous, so。 i don't know。 i've also read so many dramatic novels about families that this one just doesn't offer anything new。i still liked reading this book。 it was addicting, fast-paced and fun。 perfectly plotted as well!! i did enjoy the four main characters, especially kit and nina。 (they did remind me of the siblings from little fires everywhere! anyone else? i mean, kit is basically izzy, right?) 'malibu rising' really is a perfect beach read, as it says in the blurb。 just maybe not as 'emotionally deep as the ocean' for me。 。。。more

There’s no other writer that completely enthralls readers in a fictional story like TJR。 This story feels so real I am sad it’s not! This book has strong messages around family, and the choice you have to be good, bad or nonexistent。 Each character has unique struggles, quirks, and connections to others - her books are always a puzzle that you only can put together on the final page。 I will always recommend her books to anyone - she’s amazing!
